Settlement ISC Settlement & Community News

As of September 1, 2014, Alberta’s general minimum wage will increase from $9.95 to $10.20 per hour. The liquor server minimum wage will rise from $9.05 to $9.20 per hour. A $1 per hour differential recognizes that liquor servers typically earn tips.

About 1.5 per cent of Alberta’s employees that is approximately 25,700 people, earn minimum wage. To compare, 6.8 per cent of people earn minimum wage nationwide and 9.1 per cent in Ontario. When Alberta’s high personal exemption and low tax rates are factored in, the new general minimum wage ranks second highest in Canada, after Ontario.
