World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Settlement ISC Seniors

The United Nations (UN) has designated June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). The issue of Elder Abuse is a growing dilemma among the aging population. Elder abuse is any action by someone in a relationship of trust that results in harm or distress to an older person. The abuse of elders can take various forms like physical, emotional, financial, medication, sexual, neglect or abandonment. It is estimated that by 2050, the global population of people above the age of 60 will exceed the number of younger people. Research has shown that elderly abuse, neglect, violence, and exploitation is one of the biggest issues facing senior citizens around the world. In Calgary WEAAD was held at Calgary Municipal Complex Plaza Space. CISP staff and 50 senior clients attended the event to show our solidarity for the cause.
