Grades 3-6 students from Midnapore elementary school created 300 handmade welcome cards for newcomers.
The welcome messages included everything from must see attractions in Alberta to sampling maple syrup and how to handle Calgary’s weather. The students made these cards in celebration of We Day, an annual youth empowerment event that takes place across North America and Europe.
This is a positive example of youth connecting themselves to the wider Calgary community. Immigrant Services Calgary’s Sustainable Neighborhood Access Program has been working with schools to promote understanding about the experiences of immigrants and refugees. These initiatives contribute to building long term positive public attitudes.
