On June 15, 2016, Immigrant Services Calgary’s Community Seniors Program Facilitator, Parminder Gill, was invited to talk about Elder Abuse in program Roshani (Awareness) at Radio Red FM.
In the program, they discussed about the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) that was launched on June 15, 2006 by the International Network for the prevention of Elder Abuse, and the World Health Organization at the United Nations. The purpose of WEAAD is to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness.
Furthermore, they discussed what is elder abuse, types of elder abuse, who are the victims, who are the abusers, as well as what are the signs of elder abuse and the resources where they can get help. Parminder also informed that purple color has been designated as the awareness color for elder abuse, and provided the contact information for Elder Abuse Resource Line (403-705-3250) and also Family Violence Information Line (310-1818).
