Awareness of Common Scams

Settlement ISC Community, Updates

Some common scams specifically aimed at newcomers are now increasingly realistic. Examples of this can be posing as Government of Canada staff in hopes of obtaining gaining personal information or money. Aggressive threats such as deportation or incarceration are utilized often in these scenarios. It is important to understand that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will not do any of the above and in the circumstances of a suspicious immigration call, contact IRCC’s call centre (1-888-242-2100, in Canada only).

Other common scams can be fake emails, computer viruses or prizes in hopes of obtaining personal information. Confirming the legitimacy of the email sender and not sending any private information to these scams are ways to avoid being a victim of fraud. Moreover, reporting these instances can also prevent newcomers from being targeted.
