On June 19, Immigrant Services Calgary, in collaboration with the City of Calgary and the Calgary Immigrant Support Society hosted a World Refugee Day celebration at the Calgary Marlborough Community Association.
The event was very successful and included multicultural booths, dance performances, poetry, a traditional coffee ceremony and food from around the world. We had over 300 people in attendance!
The evening was about celebrating the strength, resilience and contributions of refugees who are making Canada their new home. Community members also learned about the struggles that refugees face around the world and ways they can show solidarity.
The event would not have been possible without the support of the following ethno-cultural communities including:
Association of Colombian Canadian Professionals of Alberta (ACCPA)
Iraqi Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCCI)
Calgary Canadian Sudanese Community Association (CCSCA)
Somali Canadian Society of Calgary (SCSC)
Pasos de Venezuela Asi es Colombia
Calgary Ethiopian Canadian Association (CECA)
Habesha United
We also had the amazing support of corporate partners such as Safeway (Northgate), Walmart, Yegna Ethiopian Restaurant and Abyssinia Ethiopian Restaurant.
Thank you to everyone who came out last night!
Thank you to Albert Woo and Yafeit Ghebregziabhier for the photos!
