Updates on Motor Vehicles Services
The provincial motor vehicle services will be temporarily shut down for a system update from 9 p.m. June 18 to 8 a.m. June 23.
During the shutdown, you will not have access to these services:
- Knowledge tests, road tests and road test bookings
- Vehicle registrations and renewals
- Driver’s licence suspension reinstatements
- Driver’s licence and ID card services (including new applications, renewals, temporary licences, exchanges, duplicates and reclassifications)
- Driver’s abstracts, searches, in-transit permits, etc.
If your licence or ID card will expire during the shutdown time, please get it renewed before June 19.
Some registry agents are offering services remotely. If you need renewal, please contact your local registry agent before the shutdown.
Updates on Driver’s Road Tests:
Before getting any class of licence in Alberta, you will need to take a road test.
Driver’s Road tests were suspended on March 19, 2020 due to COVID-19.
Since June 8, Class 1 to 4 drivers and healthcare workers seeking Class 5 Advanced licences are able to apply for road tests. Read more about how to apply here: https://www.alberta.ca/assets/documents/trans-covid-19-road-test-plan-pandemic-response.pdf
Jason Kenney, Premier of Alberta, has recently mentioned that from June 15 to 18, Class 1-3 commercial drivers who had their road tests cancelled due to COVID-19 will be contacted to re-book their road tests. Next week, June 23–26, those who had their road tests canceled due to COVID-19 in all remaining license classes will be invited to rebook tests.
