Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has recently mentioned that the Canadian government plans to transition everyone on the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) to Employment Insurance (EI) in September.
Initially developed to handle the large wave of layoffs early on in the COVID-19 pandemic, CERB has served its purpose well by providing financial support to employed and self-employed Canadians who are directly affected by COVID-19.
In the coming weeks, a transitional, parallel benefit similar to EI will be created, including access to training. There will also be a sickness and caregivers benefit if you’re not covered at work if you get COVID-19, or if your kids or parents get it and you have to take care of them.
Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks!
