City Council Passes School Safe Zones Bylaw Amendment

Calgary City Council voted to pass an amendment to restrict advocacy messaging on public property near schools.

What is advocacy messaging?

Advocacy messaging is messaging that publicly expresses an opinion on an issue or cause.

Why did the City Council vote to restrict advocacy messaging?

Certain large graphic signs have had a serious and negative impact on vulnerable students, as well as parents and teachers. Advocacy messaging positioned near schools had a distracting and harmful effect on the teaching and learning environment.

“It is important to note, that the bylaw restrictions do not impose a ban on advocacy messaging, but rather restrict the size of the sign within a certain distance from the school”

— Stacey McManaman, Business Strategist with The City of Calgary.
