In order to prevent COVID-19 spread, the Government of Canada is now recommending the use of 3 layer masks. Many disposable masks already have 3 layers, generally with a polypropylene filter. This new recommendation mainly applies to homemade masks!

Homemade masks should:

  • be made of at least 3 layers
  • include 2 layers of a tightly woven fabric, such as cotton or linen
  • include a third (middle) layer of a filter-type fabric, such as:
    • non-woven polypropylene fabric, which is washable
    • a disposable filter

The Government of Canada also provides 2 instructions on how to make your own fabric masks, one that requires sewing, one that doesn’t. These instructions also include diagrams to further explain how to make your own mask!
