How to Recycle Batteries

Lisa C. Community, Daily Life, Newcomer Information

Welcome to today’s Residential Recycling & Disposal Info for Newcomers! Batteries are an important part of our daily life, but do you know how to correctly recycle batteries?

We have carts of three different colors: Black Cart, Blue Cart & Green Cart, and you may ask where you should place batteries.

The answer is no, you cannot place batteries (rechargeable or not) into carts.

  • Batteries may get crushed and cause fires if they end up in any of the carts.

For safe handling, batteries should be taken to participating retailers for recycling:

  • Best Buy
  • Home Depot
  • Ikea
  • Lowes
  • MEC
  • Staples, etc.

These locations will receive batteries for recycling free of charge. You can store batteries you wish to recycle somewhere at home, until you have a big batch, before taking them to one of these retailers.

Since the pandemic is not yet over, we advise you to contact the location directly to confirm their business hours, whether they accept items, etc.

Word of the Day:

Rechargeable: able to be filled again with electricity

The City of Calgary has a residential recycling and disposal search tool. Check out the “What Goes Where” list here: https://www.calgary.ca/uep/wrs/what-goes-where/a-to-z-listing.html#P
