IRCC Announced Three New Initiatives to Welcome More Refugees

Lisa C. Citizenship & Immigration, Updates

Prior to World Refugee Day on June 20, the Honourable Marco E. L. Mendicino, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) announced on June 18 the following actions to strengthen refugee protection and integration efforts:

  • A new public policy will help remove unique barriers qualified refugees often face, so that they can apply through existing economic programs. Through the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot, IRCC will welcome 500 refugees over the next 2 years.
  • IRCC  will increase the 2021 admission levels for protected persons in Canada from 23,500 to 45,000 and streamline processing for low-risk applications to help applicants obtain permanent residence and contribute to their communities faster.
  • Over the next two years, we’ll provide $3M in funding to nine organizations to improve pre- and post-arrival support services for private refugee sponsors and ensure refugees are aware of the help available to them.

Supporting refugees is a proud part of Canada’s humanitarian tradition and demonstrates to the world our shared responsibility to help those who are persecuted and in need of protection.

Word of the Day:

To streamline: to make a process more efficient, effective and smooth-running
