How to Recycle or Get Rid of Christmas Lights and Christmas Decorations?

Lisa C. Community, Newcomer Information

Welcome to today’s Residential Recycling & Disposal Info for Newcomers!

How to properly recycle or get rid of Christmas lights and decorations? The short answer to this question is: it depends!
If the decorations and lights are still usable,
  • Reuse Christmas decorations, or give them away to family and friends.
  • Give them away (or sell them at a low price) on Facebook Marketplace.
  • Donate them to participating charities. Check out the options here: the Alberta Recycling Hotline.
If the decorations, tinsel and lights are broken and unusable,

Place them in your black cart as garbage;

You can also take broken Christmas lights to a City landfill for metal recycling. Check this map for City landfill locations.

Word of the Day:

Tinsel: thin strips of metal foil used for decoration during holidays and celebration
