IRCC Looking to Modernizing Canada’s Immigration System

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is working on modernizing Canada’s immigration system to

  • support economic recovery
  • improve client service.
Highlights of progress include but are not limited to the following areas:

Permanent Residence (PR)

  • online PR applications, including PR card renewals
  • easier access to status updates on some family class (FC) applications
  • processing FC and Canadian Experience Class applications within service standards

Temporary Residence

  • prioritizing study and work permit processing
  • using advanced data analytics tools to support processing
  • reducing application inventories that grew during the pandemic, including visitor visas


  • online citizenship applications
  • online tracker provides updates on citizenship application status and next steps
  • expanding use of online citizenship tests and video oath ceremonies
