Free Income Tax Return Clinics for Newcomers

Immigrant Services Calgary will be hosting free Income Tax Return Clinics for newcomers who are eligible. These income tax return clinics will be run by volunteers and available at the Immigrant Services Calgary office. The schedule for the income tax return clinics will be released early 2020. To ensure you will have an appointment with an income tax return volunteer, make an appointment with a settlement counselor so you are notified when it is available.

Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Application Postponed

Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino has given notice that the application process for the 2020 Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship application is being postponed, it is usually opened in the month of January. The reason for postponing this is to “complete the development of a new application intake management process for the parents and grandparents sponsorship program, to be implemented in 2020.”

People can now give their fingerprints and photo right here in Canada

Building on a government commitment made earlier this year, Canada is rolling out the final phase of its biometrics collection program.
As of December 3, 2019, foreign nationals applying from within Canada for temporary or permanent residence, or to extend or renew their visitor visa or work or study permit, will need to have their fingerprints and photo taken and can do so at any of the 58 designated Service Canada locations across the country. This means individuals will now save time and money by being able to give their biometrics within Canada.

National Seniors Day 2019 Cerebration

For the past 8 years on October 1st, 2019, Immigrant Services Calgary’s Seniors Program has been hosting National Seniors Day to recognize the remarkable contributions that seniors make to their families, communities and society.

This year, National Seniors Day will be happening on October 1st from 1:30 to 3:30 PM at the New Central Library “Patricia A. Whelan” Performance Hall. There will be multicultural performances, information booths and displays, inspiring stories and also light refreshments. Join us to celebrate our seniors!

Immigrant Services Calgary will host its fourth Virtual Career Fair (VCF) on October 2 & 3, 2019. The event is free for professional newcomer job seekers and will be accessible online across Canada. There will be 20+ organizations participating, offering 1000+ jobs for various industries and positions targeting all newcomers. Companies will also be hosting live webinars to discuss various topics both days, viewers will also be able to ask questions at the end of each session. Book Launch: A Colourful Life

On August 9th 2019, Immigrant Services Calgary (ISC) hosted a book launch celebration. The Honourable Josephine Pon, Minister of Seniors and Housing, also attended this celebration and presented the signature ceremony and book presentation. The book, titled “A Colourful Life”, is collection of poems and stories written by immigrant seniors from the creative writing class for seniors at ISC. This book is a result of a collaboration between ISC and Mount Royal University. Over 12 weeks, professors and students from Mount Royal and immigrant seniors worked together to write and craft stories about the topic of home.
