It is with great pleasure that Immigrant Services Calgary hosted the Stampede 101 event with Accenture Calgary team last Friday. It was a fun way to network professionally, enjoy the lunch and line dancing as well as integrate newcomers into the Calgarian culture.

Hiring Event for Green Event Services

Immigrant Services Calgary hosted a hiring event for Green Event Services.
2 company representatives conducted 23 interviews with Immigrant Services Calgary’s clients. Green Events Services will be offering 4 candidates’ positions in the role of Crew Member and 4 clients as Green Team Educators.

National Indigenous Peoples Day 2018

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day, formerly known as National Aboriginal Day. It is a day for Canadians to celebrate indigenous peoples’ culture, heritage, and contributions. The date was chosen because it corresponds to the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.

Marking World Refugee Day by supporting newcomer employment – IRCC

June 20 is World Refugee Day. Today, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship and the Honourable Bardish Chagger, Minister of Small Business and Tourism, announced an innovative pilot project that will connect newcomers with jobs in the hotel industry. This 3-year project will assist up to 1,300 newcomers – many fo them refugees – in gaining job experience. During the employment, they will be able to improve their language skills as well. 

Property taxes are due June 29 – the City of Calgary

In Canada, homeowners are required to pay their property taxes each year, and they pay property tax directly to their local government. In Calgary, the property taxes are due June 29. Any account not paid in full as of July 1 is penalized 7% on the unpaid taxes. There are different payment options to pay directly to the City or through banks. 

Alberta Health Services Warns of Text Scams Using Its Name

Alberta Health Services is warning Albertans about a new text scam. Some Albertans have been receiving text messages that links to what looks like an e-transfer site. Once you open the link, the site asks you to input your bank information. Alberta Health Services would like to clarify that it would never send text messages, and would never request for money through e-transfer. If you receive such a text message, do not open the link.

Alberta redesigns drivers licences and identification cards

Alberta has redesigned its driver’s licenses and identification cards with updated security features to help protect Albertans against counterfeiting and identification theft.
The new design reflects Alberta’s landscape and history, and it includes an image of an Albertosaurus, a dinosaur, whose remains were first found in Alberta.

National Parks’ free admission day

Canada plans to lift visa requirement for United Arab Emirates

On May 28, 2018, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced plans to remove the visa requirement for UAE citizens on June 5, 2018. UAE citizens will not need a visa for short visits to Canada (up to 6 months).
Although UAE citizens will not need to apply for a visa, like other visa-exempt travelers, they will still need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to or transit through Canada.
